5 Tips to Prepare Your House for the Cold Snap

Cold weather – a winter wonderland or an expensive occasion to repair the plumbing issues in your home? We hope it’s the first one, so we’ve come up with a list that will help you see winter the same.

If you need help with any of the following, we’re happy to take care of the plumbing in your house so that you take care of the winter fun in your home.

1. Start with the outdoor taps

Because they are located outdoors, these taps are likely to freeze first during winter. When they do, they can damage the tubes inside the walls to which they’re attached. If the damage is not detected quickly enough, it can extend to the entire pipe structure and cause major damage.

What should you do?

– identify all the taps located outdoors, remove their hoses and drain any residual water.

– turn off the valve for each tap, then drain the residual water in the pipes.

– cover or insulate the taps.

2. Drain the water from any unused pipes

The second thing you need to take care of are the pipes that are rarely used. Drain any residual water that can freeze and build pressure on the tubes, and avoid using them for the rest of the winter. If, for any reason, you need to start using them again during the cold, reach out to a specialist to avoid any damage.

3. Insulate the pipes that are located in unheated areas

Pipes running through the cellar? Insulate them using rigid foam or insulation sleeves. If you choose to do it yourself, make sure to add extra insulation to any crack and pipes near external walls.

4. Fix the cracks and breaches

The last thing you need during winter is for a pipe to crack and flood the house. If you already know of a frail-looking pipe or of another issue in your plumbing system, take care of it before the cold weather begins.

5. Check the heat

Did the weather forecast announce an unusually cold winter? Check the heating to make sure it works as it should so you don’t get any surprises. The best way to save money and be winter ready is to look into weather compensation which helps control the temperature by keeping the house typically between 18 and 21 degrees.
